Job Description

Position Overview

The Intake Specialist ensures that program applicants and veteran families are screened for program eligibility and processed for enrollment in the SUS Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program and Veterans Division services.  As the initial contact point for service-seeking veterans, the Specialist is expected to demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and responsiveness when communicating with program applicants, referral agencies, and staff.  The Intake Specialist will understand all facets of SSVF program services, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs SSVF eligibility criteria, as well as the SUS Veterans Services policies and procedures related to program admission/rejection, recordkeeping, the targeting of priority applicants and related program components. This staff member will maintain detailed records for each intake session and enrolled household, producing data for required reports and as requested by management.   


  • Experience in intake, case management, and/or community outreach strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft windows, Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook required.
  • Experience with electronic database systems (such as the AWARDS system) is preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness and ability to conduct fieldwork (approximately 25% of the time)
  • Solid organizational skills/strong communication and writing skills required.
  • Proper phone and email etiquette a must.  
  • High energy level to complete assigned work and meet deadlines.   
  • Refined customer service and interpersonal skills a must.
  • Willingness to attend occasional events outside of normal business hours.
  • Ability to work on Veterans Day
  • Former service in the U.S. Armed Forces, past experience with working with U.S. military veterans and/or high level of military cultural competency is preferred.
